Christ Dominion Academy’s Calculus I course is designed for every Christian student. This course aims to blend both the mastery of the core concepts of Calculus with Biblical worldview and the place of Calculus in history.
In most traditional schools, Calculus is thought to be only for the "math minded" of those pursuing STEM fields. Christ Dominion does not hold this view. The fundementals of Calculus are central to Western culture, modern physics, and understanding math and science in general. It is incredibly important that all of today's Christian students are able to engage in all areas of our modern world.
Calculus I
The goal of Christ Dominion Academy’s first year calculus course is to introduce the fundamentals of calculus using only first year algebra. This class will guide students into interacting with and applying calculus concepts with polynomials alone, keeping it suitable for all students. Students may then go on to apply these principals to ever broader applications in further courses.
This course also has the broad goal of familiarizing students with the place of Calculus in history. We will study and discuss key mathematicians and their roles (like the founder Isaac Newton) throughout this problem of explaining change. Students should expect to encounter discussions of Western philosophy, the Scientific Revolution, the Reformation, and even literature giants like Byron, making this a math class like no other.
Students will be expected and encouraged to explore and discuss problems with the rest of the class. Calculus I aims to teach students not only the math concepts but also how to be problem solvers and to think critically. Students will attend a live class fours times a week and homework assignments will be posted through Google Classroom.
